Sheffield Academic Medicine Society
A student-led society that was founded to raise and promote participation in medical research among students.
SAMs Round Up 2024/25
It’s been an exciting year for Sheffield Academic Medicine Society! We started off with a complete relaunch of our social media and website, increasing engagement for students interested in academic medicine.
In September, we welcomed the new cohort of intercalating students, and set up a mentorship scheme scheme betweeen new and old students, which ran throughout the year. Other events in the Winter Semester were the annual Inspire Conference, which took place in Leeds and saw Sheffield students presenting posters, and the annual 2a research presentation evening. The latter also incorporated a new element by including presentation of intercalation projects from older years. This event gave students the opportunity to practice presenting to senior faculty and recieving advice which will hopefully support people’s confidence in applying to further conferences.
This Spring Semester has seen the launch of the new teaching series, which has focused on the various aspects of academic medicine. Talks have covered the SFP process, NIHR clinical academic pathway, post graduate research opportunities, with the final talk upcoming and centring around finding opportunities for research in F1/2 outside of SFP.
Additionally this year saw the relaunch of ‘Project Platform’ which aims to pair up interested medical students with supervisors for research projects. We had a record number of applications and are currently in the process of pairing people up!
It has been a fantastic year and we have thoroughly enjoyed speaking to students at the Careers Fair and the Freshers’ Fayre. Please keep an eye on the instagram for next years exciting opportunities from the new team. From the 2024/25 Committee, it’s over and out!

Founded by Students for Students
Sheffield Academic Medicine Society (SAMS) was founded in order to raise the awareness of and promote participation in medical research among students, by facilitating the free exchange of ideas between University or hospital staff and students. The aims of the society are: To raise the awareness of and enthusiasm for a career in academic medicine. To develop a research platform to enable student participation in the medical research that is carried out in research groups throughout the university. To develop avenues by which students can take steps towards a career in academic medicine by providing opportunities to build a research orientated portfolio and acquire fundamental research skills
